That means the AUD is likely to consolidate against the USD in the short term, before some measured gains in the second half, according to Ashish Agrawal, Head of FX and Emerging Markets Macro Strategy Research for Asia at Barclays. By contrast, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has cumulatively tightened by 5% while the US Federal Reserve has lifted rates by 4.75%, despite recent turmoil in the banking sector and fears of a recession. The RBA raised interest rates by a total of 3.5% before pausing this month to assess the impact. It has lost nearly 2% against the USD this year. The AUD has underperformed against most G-10 currencies in 2023 as the Reserve Bank of Australia has slowed the pace of its rate hikes compared to other central banks, raising the differential in interest rates. Citing an Intertek study that found 96% of its workers receive wages higher than the industry average, Shein also said it had made “significant investments to improve the working conditions of our suppliers’ facilities.UDiscover is delighted to present the video premiere of ‘I Will Grow,’ the new single release by Steve Rodgers. Shein has also built an in-house team that will monitor its supply-chain partners and is engaging independent agencies like Intertek Group PLC to conduct regular audits of supplier factories. In the same memo, Shein addressed concerns around labor law violations, stating that all suppliers would be required to comply with a code of conduct based on conventions by the International Labour Organization. With its headquarters now based in Singapore, Shein also began manufacturing in Turkey and is leasing and operating warehouses in Poland to ship to customers in Europe. The move is seen as part of the company’s attempt to move its supply chain away from China, where it has largely been rooted with over 3,000 suppliers in southern China’s Guangdong province. “The marketplace platform makes available a range of additional merchandise and shipping options, and we expect it to result in increased customer engagement and satisfaction,” the memo said. In December, it was reported that Shein is now exploring moving to an online marketplace platform to enable other merchants to sell directly to customers, rather than under Shein’s label, according to a memo to investors viewed by The Wall Street Journal. “Sustainable fashion is a privilege,” wrote the 26-year-old in response. When Drew Afualo, a TikTok influencer with over 6 million followers, faced online backlash for partnering with Shein, she defended the partnership by saying that “not everyone can afford to shop sustainably.” In one factory, they made a daily base salary of $20, which would then be docked by $14 if any garments had mistakes.īut still, the brand continues to soar in popularity across the world-especially in countries like France, Ireland, Iceland, Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and China. Channel4’s documentary, Inside The Shein Machine, sent undercover cameras to film factory workers who were forced to pull 17-hour shifts to make hundreds of garments a day. Many also worked without contracts or minimum wage requirements, thereby allowing the company to reportedly fail to pay its employees properly. The group hired independent Chinese researchers to track Shein’s manufacturing and packing process in China and Europe and found that many were running informal factories set up in residential buildings.Īdvocacy groups and journalists also uncovered evidence that Shein’s $11 bikinis and $7 crop tops were being made by people working in unsafe workshops, lacking safety protocols like windows and emergency exits. Then, Swiss watchdog Public Eye released another detailed report in November which accused Shein of violating Chinese labor laws. A lengthy investigation by Wired first chronicled how both laborers and consumers suffered from the production of its clothes, while a documentary by the U.K.’s Channel 4 found that Shein employees were working 75-hour shifts with very little time off. A damning record on workers’ rightsĭespite it all, perhaps the bigger controversy regarding Shein is the treatment of its workers, who toil away in Chinese factories in unfit conditions. Still, the impact of these initiatives is yet to be seen, especially considering a survey by BCG which found that just 18% of retailers who had previously set emissions targets were on track to achieving them, while another 35% were stalled in their progress. According to an investigation by Rest of World, Shein added anywhere between 2,000 and 10,000 individual styles to its app each day between July and December of 2021. The business model works like Amazon-a sprawling online marketplace brings together about 6,000 clothing factories in China under Shein’s label, while internal management software collects near-instant data about which items are selling and which aren’t to visibly boost the popular items. Its biggest selling point is the low pricing of clothes that are shipped to more than 150 countries and regions worldwide, catering to women in their teens and 20s. Over the years, Shein went from being a low-cost Chinese apparel merchant to a global, online-only fashion juggernaut, climbing in sales from $10 billion in 2020 (according to Bloomberg) to a whopping $100 billion in 2022. Pronounced “she-in,” the fast fashion Chinese behemoth was founded in the city of Nanjing in 2008 by Chris Xu, a U.S.-born entrepreneur and search engine optimization specialist. While this sounds promising, we can’t be certain that it tells the full story.ĭreamland weighted sleep sacks first became available in 2019. The authors could not make any conclusions about associations with SIDS in general.Īs such, researchers proposed further studies to evaluate the safety of weighted blanket use in non-NICU settings where infants aren’t continuously monitored.Īs of Summer 2021, no deaths linked to Dreamland Baby products have been reported to the CPSC. Notably, this study and its conclusions were limited to infants who wore weighted garments for very short periods of time-and while under constant medical supervision. The authors recommended continuing to use weighted blankets to treat NAS in infants monitored in a NICU setting. The study, which had 16 participants, found “no adverse events” during any of the 30-minute sessions during which the infants were covered with weighted blankets. There is one recent study on the safety and effectiveness of weighted blankets for infants being treated for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in the NICU. There is very little research that specifically examines the relationship between weighted garments and SIDS. “That is why parents like swaddling – the baby sleeps longer and doesn’t wake up as easily… But we know that decreased arousal can be a problem and may be one of the main reasons that babies die of SIDS.”Īre there reasons to believe that weighted sleep sacks may be safe for infant sleep?īefore we examine the safety claims made directly by Dreamland Baby, let’s consider whether there is evidence that weighted sleep sacks and swaddles may be safe. Rachel Moon, explains this very important connection: The chairperson of the AAP’s SIDS Task Force, Dr. This sounds like a good thing, but actually, the ability to wake easily is an important protective response to stressors during sleep. Weighted garments simulate being hugged or swaddled, which causes infants to sleep more deeply. These are some of the functions that are theorized to go wrong when a baby dies of SIDS.Ĭompression may make it harder for a baby to wake up. This is the system that controls things like breathing, heart regulation, body temperature, coughing, and swallowing. Wearing a weighted garment stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine, which causes the autonomic nervous system to relax. Weighted products may relax the autonomic nervous system. “A product that is 18% of an infant’s weight is particularly worrisome for this reason,” Rahal adds. “My main concern with these weighted sleep sacks being recommended in infancy is that a child who manages to roll themselves over in one of these sacks may not be able to unroll themselves because of the additional weight, increasing the risk for suffocation.” Sarah Rahal, a pediatric neurologist, agrees: A weighted blanket that reaches up to the shoulders or back of the head would keep a baby from lifting and turning to get access to fresh air.”ĭr. “In prone babies I am concerned about anything that keeps them from lifting and turning their head. James Kemp calls weighted blankets for infants “a dreadful idea.” There is insufficient evidence to answer this question with a definitive “yes” or “no.”īut, let’s consider 3 potential areas for concern:Īdded weight may make it more difficult for a baby to reposition themselves. Can using a Dreamland weighted sack increase the risk of SIDS? On the PC, edge aliasing issues can be mitigated by using a combination of both multi-sampling AA (for better sub-pixel coverage) and post-process FXAA, which works on the rest of the scene after other rendering passes have been done. Sub-pixel issues are also a problem despite the additional smoothing effect in other areas. On the other hand, MLAA appears to be deployed on the PS3, providing slightly better edge coverage but incurring a more obvious blurring effect in the process. On the Xbox 360, NVIDIA's FXAA is utilised, with all the usual benefits and trade-offs we find when using post-process AA: some texture blur is visible and sub-pixel shimmering is very apparent in certain areas of the game, particularly evident when the engine is rendering finely detailed scenery. "There's a handful of plus and minus points in terms of image quality on either console, but you're not likely to notice the differences at all during general gameplay." The cause of the variance here lies with the anti-aliasing techniques used on each format, with different forms of post-process edge-smoothing subtly changing the look of each version of the game. Texture detail and especially foliage tends to get blurred a little more on PlayStation 3, reducing the clarity and crispness of the artwork. Use the full-screen button on the bottom-right of this window for full 720p resolution.įirstly, both console versions of Hitman: Absolution render natively in 720p, although we do find that the game looks a little sharper on the 360. "Image quality is clean on console with the chosen post-process anti-aliasing techniques providing the most noticeable point of difference between 360 and the PlayStation 3." Hitman: Absolution compared on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. So far so good, but how well does Hitman: Absolution's share of technical achievements fare across multiple platforms? Let's start with the requisite head-to-head videos covering both console versions and the PC edition, backed up by a comprehensive triple-format comparison gallery. From crowded town centres to packed rush-hour train stations, Agent 47's actions directly affect those around him - a quick showing of firearms shocks surrounding individuals, while witnessing gunfire and hand-to-hand combat sends them fleeing in panic. On top of this, the other main change comes from the Glacier 2 engine's ability to render hundreds of characters on-screen at any given point, creating some densely populated environments in parts of the game. The lighting model is also engineered using deferred shading techniques, allowing for many more dynamic lights in any given scene compared to IO's previous work. For one, IO eschews the 60Hz gameplay of its last title, instead targeting a 30FPS update in line with most other titles this generation, while a more subtle version of the grain/noise filter used in Kane and Lynch 2 gives Hitman: Absolution a grittier look. Powered by IO Interactive's new Glacier 2 engine, Hitman: Absolution builds upon some of the artistic and technical choices of the older Kane and Lynch titles while making dramatic changes to the rendering set-up in a number of areas. It's been six years since we last saw Agent 47 in action in the entertaining Hitman: Blood Money, with creators IO Interactive temporarily putting the series on hold to work on its mostly forgettable Kane and Lynch titles. That being said IMO the super boomerang at SFGAdv is a terrible addition. These will be great additions to SFGAm and SFStL, especially considering SFGAm's current Huss Frisbee is really old and unreliable but still pretty popular (it was relocated from SFGAdv 20 years ago and I have no idea how long it was there). Great Escape is in no man's land, but might be worth a visit for us next year if we find a way to make it up to SFNE next summer. I really liked Switchback at ZDT's in Texas, and it's always good to have some different manufacturers out there getting opportunities with the big boys. The most interesting announcement for me is Bobcat, a woodie from Gravitykraft. The only SFA announcement that's worth some publicity is the return of their stunt show, which was probably one of the best regularly staged live entertainment offerings across the entire chain, but was suspended this season for unknown reasons. This is likely taking over the pad where the bull flat ride was (or maybe the old tilt-a-whirl pad), and renaming and repainting Mind Eraser is putting lipstick on a pig. The new attraction looks interesting to watch, but doesn't appear very dynamic from a rider's perspective. Now they're going to overlay Steam Punk elements on top of an otherwise well-themed area while other parts of the park that could use some attention are allowed to stagnate. I did like the Steam Pun/Western theming used at SFFT (other SF Steam Punk overlays are most mediocre), but Coyote Creek was one of the better western themed lands in the entire SF chain. The "additions" to my home park, SFA, are pretty lame. For a park as popular as SFGAdv, I always wonder about capacity, and the ops teams have proved me wrong by doing an excellent job with the otherwise low throughput of Jersey Devil, but unless Flash has a switch track to allow multi-train operation, this is going to be a pretty slow-moving line given the length of this shuttle coaster even if crews are on their game. Based on the photos, it looks like they're adding it behind Cyborg, which will create a crowded corner of Gotham (would have made more sense to put this between Wonder Woman and the Gotham Arena).
